I had a great conversation with my father last night. It mainly revolved around politics. In the midst of the conversation, my dad said he was going to be staying up late to watch all the election coverage. Thinking of the blog I just had written, I asked him what he is going to do in the following weeks after the election.

His reply surprised me… “Jacob, I’ve never been into elections as much as I have been in this one. I’ve never felt this way before. Even at work, I have CNN Electoral Map minimized and I check that every so often. I check the polls daily to see if they’re changing. I watch CNN and MSNBC when I get home until I go to bed. It’s like I’m obsessed. I can’t get enough of it.”

A lot of people are drawing parallels between 1960′s election and now. He was only 3 years old at that time, but he still remembers that time period. “Obama, like Kennedy, has motivated people in a way never before seen in America. Young people are standing up and voting. So many people want a change and the only way to get that is through Obama.”

At work we did a story about people becoming obsessed with the election. Some cases are worse than other, but worst case senario being totally consuming their lives to the point where they aren’t productive. I don’t think (and hope) that’s not the case with my father. He has always been more or less a quiet guy, but when he cares about something, he’ll speak his mind. I could feel his passion last night on the phone.
