I just signed up for artistwebsites.com. They are a service who creates webpages for artists to host their work and potentially broker sales. Artistwebsites are extremely easy because I won’t have to worry about printing the pictures, dealing with stretching the canvas and shipping. They take care of everything, including payment. Of course, with that, they’ll be taking their cut of the sale of the picture.

If you have a second, please visit the site and let me know what you think. You can few the site HERE or by clicking on the slideshow below. Please pass this onto anyone you may know who enjoy photography. I can even make a promo code to make it cheaper for you to purchase.

I am currently running two promotions. First, for the month of January, I am having a promotion of 50% OFF your entire purchase! Please use discount code MNRNAK at checkout!

I also have a special running on my favorite picture from Italy. Up until Saturday Jan 7th, you’re able to purchase the ‘Sunset over the Arno River’ 14′x11′ Stretched Canvas print for ONLY $50! There are only 15 prints available, so act fast before they’re gone. Here is the link for that promotion.

I’m not asking you to buy anything, rather just visit the site, offer some constructive criticism, and pass it to a family member or friend.

Thanks and enjoy!

My Idea for Elections

Anyone else starting to block out election coverage? Tomorrow’s Iowa Caucuses are 308 days until the General Election on November 6th. Romney “officially” announced he was running 214 days ago on June 2nd, 2011. Even before Romney’s announcement, political commentators spent hours analyzing potential candidates (“Will she run… or not?”). He is one of at least 8 people sharing this coverage. This whole process has gotten absurd.

There are a whooping 28(!!!!) primary debates either completed or to be completed for the GOP. Really?! If we haven’t reached it already, when do those debates become repetitive?

I see no need for presidential candidates to campaign for over 500 days. There is such a thing as apathy. I also say this understanding this is being done by President Obama as well. He’s done fundraisers while in office while his GOP contenders battled it out at a debate.

Here’s my idea: I propose making “election season” an eight-month ordeal. Not too short that candidates can’t get their message across and not long enough that we get tired of hearing their message. Instead of allowing candidates to declare candidacy whenever they’d like, they have the first week of March to enter the race. Stand on your front porch and make your entry speech, then hit the road, but not a day before March. You’ll also be prohibited from doing fundraising prior to March 1st (you too, President Obama).

Former Governor Jon Hunstman

3.5 months after you declare your presidency bid, the primary elections are held. No early Iowa Caucuses or New Hampshire Primaries; everyone, from all 50 states, vote on the same day. How a candidate performs in Iowa early on, on some occasions, determines if that candidate stay in the race. Why does Iowa get to “whittle down” candidates for the rest of the country? Jon Huntsman, arguably one of the GOP’s strongest candidates, isn’t putting any effort in Iowa. It’ll be interesting to see how long that campaign lasts. (side note: 2008 GOP candidate John McCain finished fourth in the Iowa Caucasus that year.) There will be five debates; one for each of the major news networks (Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS).

If you survive your party’s nomination process, you begin next four months campaigning for the General Election. Again, not too short and not too long…. just right. Four months is plenty of time to continue to plead your case to the country (remember, you’ve already been doing it for 4 months during the primaries). During debates, you will be questioned on previous policy and evasive half truths and lies will not be tolerated. You’re running for President; not getting voted to a popularity contests. Truths may hurt, but lying is so much worse.

As normal, the General Election will take place the first Tuesday in November.

I bring up this suggestion knowing it will never work. BILLIONS of dollars are tied to the election. 24/7 news cycles will have little to fill their hours of commentary with (maybe more reruns of Lockup: RAW?). Sales teams at local TV stations will have massive amounts of inventory to fill bottom-feeding  advertisements. (Have you or someone you know been a victim of ____?).

Again, I know this would never have a chance of changing the political landscape. Still, it’d be nice to see the season shortened so we, as the electorate, can actually begin to care again. Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant are enjoying a shortened season, why can’t Mitt Romney and Ron Paul?

What ideas do you have to improve the election process?

An Evening with Ludovico Einaudi

Nov10

On Tuesday evening, I had the special opportunity to go a Ludovico Einaudi concert. You’re probably ask yourself “Who the heck is Ludovico Einaudi?” He’s a wonderful pianist on tour in the United States and Canada. He was born and lives in northern Italy.

I stumbled upon Einaudi after viewing The Mountain, a time lapse video that features his music as the soundtrack. From that day forward, I have really become a fan. I’ve purchased three of his CDs, made my ringtone a clip of Nuvole Bianche, and now have had the pleasure of seeing him live.

It’s funny, as a 25 year old, that I never expected to enjoy piano music as much as I do. In fact, during my younger years as a valet, I remember saying to myself that I’d never like that kind of music. You’d understand how I felt if you had to listen to the radio of a pompous ass who just tipped you 50 cents for parking his Jaguar. Still, Einaudi’s compositions are unlike most of the other music of the same genre. I don’t know what that “thing” is that makes Mozart or Beethoven so incredible, but Einaudi is on their level to me.

I met up with one of my best friends, Rich Pezzillo, in Metro Center and we took the train over to the Kennedy Center. It was the first time I’d ever been there. The theater we were in seated about 150-200 people and surprisingly was only about 75% full.

Einaudi played for 90 minutes, mixing in songs from new and old albums. As Rich put it, “you were able to close your eyes and feel the music.”

I even stayed after the concert for a meet-and-greet and autograph. As he was signing my CD, I asked “Posso prendere una foto con te?” (Can I take a picture with you?). He said very nicely that if he takes one with me, he has to get one with everyone. I did what anyone would do and waited until the very end of the line and got this picture.

I encourage everyone to check out Ludovico Einaudi on youtube or iTunes.

Who’s Who of Weather – NWA 2011

The past few days I’ve been in Birmingham at the National Weather Association’s 2011 conference. It’s really been a great trip. This conference is basically a Who’s Who of Meteorologist across the TV world. I’ve been told that this conference set a record for attendees around 650; 150 of them being broadcast meteorologists (also a record).

In my job at WeatherBug, I’ve been blessed to work with people I once dreamed of becoming. On this trip, I’ve met around ten TV meteorologists who I work with daily, yet never have met face-to-face. In addition, I got to hang out with many others I’ve trained in the past two years. Even non-WeatherBug partners were great to meet… I’m talking to you Brad Panovich, Amy Sweezey, and James Spann and the countless others who are too numerous to list.

I even had the chance to meet one of my weather role-models, Jim Cantore. I introduced myself as Jacob from WeatherBugMedia (on Twitter). He responded that he loved what I did with my tweets and to keep up the good work. That meant the world to me. We got the chance to chat for awhile about the business, about storm chasing (“it’s a blast, isn’t it?”), and weather in general. I saw him a couple other times during the conference, and each time he remembered my name.

Jim Cantore. Just two bald guys having a good time.

NWAS 2011 was a great experience. I really hope I’m able to go to more of these in the future.
