Marrying On The First Date

Sarah Palin is the perfect example of why people don’t get married on the first date. Let me explain. As a nobody (and you can argue all you want with me about that), Sarah Palin was going to bring a new “freshness” to the Republican Party. I’m sure the decision to choose her as VP had nothing to do with thinking women are dumb enough to fall for the “since the Democrats hung Hillary out to dry, vote for the McCain/GENERIC WOMAN ticket”.

Sure America, including SNL, took Palin and made her into a rock star. But as in any good celebrity marriage, it is starting to get ugly.

First there is Palin spending $150,000 on clothing for herself and her family. I agree with Geoff Fox when he says the GOP tries to make Palin into a next door neighbor; a hockey mom from Wasilla. I guess they didn’t realize not too many neighbors have $150,000 clothing budgets. Palin struck back to critics by saying that those giving her crap about the money are sexist and men wouldn’t have to face the scrutiny she has faced. Really? You’re going to go there? The best part about this situation is the purchase could have violated campaign laws by using election money for ‘personal use’ — a reform that was pushed for by McCain himself.

Palin has also decided to ‘go rogue’ and has started to disregard advice from those whose only job is to advise her. This has created many tense situations on the campaign trail. Now that she is in the limelight, could she be possibly setting herself up for an Obama-esqe run for president? If you think about it though, Obama really wasn’t known until his speech at the Democratic Convention four years ago.

Palin doesn’t want to be labeled as anything that isn’t truly her (which I don’t blame her). That is why John McCain made a horrible decision in choosing Palin. Don’t choose someone who is unheard of, regardless if she has more executive experience or can see Russia from her bedroom window. Discovery Channel has it all wrong. For McCain’s campaign, Palin has turned into their “Deadliest Catch”.

All that being said, don’t marry on the first date… unless she’s über hot.

  • Except you are looking at it from a liberal point of view.
a: you aren’t voting for McCAin anyway so they don’t really care what you think.
b: If you were older, like Geoff, you would think she is really hot! In an election, looks are very important.
c: $150,000 is not a gift to her. They bought the clothes for her to wear to spiff up her image to people like me. It worked.
d: When the election is over the campaign will donate the clothes.
Do you really think this is the only campaign that spends money on image? Image is everything. Geoff has an “Image” allowance doesn’t he?

  • Mr Kabin,
Don’t get me wrong, I do think Palin is a good looking 40-something. They did spend $150,000 on her AND her family to spiff up their image, but the GOP was trying to portray her as a hockey mom. How many ‘hockey families’ have clothing budgets of $150,000… or even MAKE $150,000? I think there was a major disconnect there. Yes TV personalities, Geoff included, do get a ‘clothing allowance’. I can assure you that it is nowhere near $150 grand though.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Yes, but Geoff’s job is nowhere near as high profile as Sarah’s Potential job…..YET.

  • Mr Karbin,
I think it’s saying one thing and then doing the opposite. They’re all against “pork barrel spending” when they’re using donated & public money for PRADA, ARMANI, & GUCCI. I mean COME ON! You need a little money for that but why such expensive brands? and why for her family, too?

You’re missing the point with Geoff as well. Geoff isn’t taking the public’s money when he has a clothing allowance– he’s using a private corporations.

    Duh.

  • I guess we aren’t going to agree on this. But I’ll try more… All the campaigns are ALL about image. Every thing they do is image. To pick on the Republicans for this one instance is unfair if you don’t point out the same things the Dems do. I also have some experience in campaigning with public money and they are very specific about what you can and cannot do. Image is absolutely fine as long as she doesn’t profit. They say they will donate the clothes after the election. I have no reason to believe they won’t.

  • Mr Kabin,
Iamge is everything yes… But what the Republicans were trying to do is portray Palin as an everyday person. Everyone knows Cindy McCain is loaded beyond belief, and they expect her to live that lifestyle. When the GOP tries to make Palin into that ‘hockey mom’, but with a $150,000 clothing budget, they fail miserably.

Mike — I really like your pork barrel spending connection. Kinda hypocritical I’d say.

  • You guys are so biased… Mike, the duh comment is ridiculous. There is no difference in spending the money. Geoff answers to management. The Republicans and McCain/Palin answer to the voters and the donors and the Elections enforcement commission. Where the money comes from is irrelevant. And comparing campaign spending to Pork barrel also is irrelevant. Once the money is in the account to be spent, it has to be spent. Do either one of you know anything about public campaign financing???? Pork barrel spending is something that can be stopped by congress if they desire. As long as laws are followed, which they were, no one has any say about campaign spending except the campaign. That is what Campaign finance reform is about. Oh, and by the way the poor Democrats didn’t take any public money for Obama because they have so much they didn’t need the help, yet when George Bush raised LESS he was vilified. Kinda hypocritical don’t you think?
