The Tryout

Back in my days at WestConn, I partnered with Dan Amarante and Adam Mierzejewski in a video class to create “The Tryout”. It follows the life of Steve, played by Dan, as he struggles with first choosing to play baseball and then his rise to fame. This Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award winning production got us an “A” for the final.

Digits: The Movie

What looks to be a very funny independant movie is premiering next Thursday in Milford, CT. Digits, a high school ‘mockumentary’ centering on Charlie Davis and his three friends, sold out the 200 seat Rave Cinemas in the Milford Mall very quickly.  The film took a little over a year to make on a budget of less than $20,000.

The peeps of Digits

I first heard about this movie from a college friend, Toni-Ann Mastracchio. She plays Jenny in Digits. As she described to me, Charlie and his friends “are looking for love, or rather, some ‘digits’ and stumble upon four beautiful girls. Hilarity ensues.”

I have no doubt this is a funny movie; not only because I’ve known Toni-Ann’s humor for a long time, but they also released a trailer and a few short clips. Each video had me laughing out loud at the dark humor.

The clip below proves a lot to me. First, you can tell that the movie is filmed and editted very well. Secondly, you can tell see some of the akwardness and humor. Charlie’s questionable sexual preference, a theme possibly repeated throughout the movie, is exemplified with his hesitation to kiss his girlfriend.

I think this film will benefit not having to ‘conform’ to the PC standards of Hollywood. There are some twisted jokes that are admittedly cringe worthy, but nothing that isn’t heard between a group of guy friends. Check out their Character Featurette. I dare you not to laugh.

If you’re bummed like me that you’ll be missing the premier, don’t worry. Not only will there be DVDs for sale, but Digits will be submitted to multiple film festivals with the hope of a wider release. I have a feeling this film may make the big leagues. Special congratulations to Toni-Ann on your hard work paying off!

Miracle At St. Anna

I just saw a commercial for Miracle at St. Anna. While I was watching the trailer, the first thing that came to my mind is that this has to be a Spike Lee film. In the middle of the summer, Spike Lee criticized Clint Eastwood for Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” and the lack of African-American soldiers. Eastwood responded with “Has he ever studied history?” There were no African-American soldiers in the actual battle portrayed by Eastwood. He went on to say “A guy like him should shut his face”.

The only reason that I am commenting on this is because I think Spike Lee is an idiot. He is a great director, but as soon as he opens his mouth, nothing but crap comes out.

I have not seen this movie, nor will I. I don’t agree with anything Spike Lee says. Racism may be alive still today, but with the election of Obama, we took a great step forward. I really don’t think Spike helps the cause he’s fighting for…

Defiance

I just got back from seeing the movie Defiance and I must tell you, I loved it. It is a true story of four brothers in Belarus during the Holocaust. Defiance follows the Bieliski family as they try to survive being hunted by the Nazis.

This movie is unlike any Holocaust movie I’ve seen. It is not a sad movie like Schindler’s List or a seri-comedy like La Vita È Bella, rather this movie is Saving Private Ryan and Patriot-esque. Lots of fighting, some slower parts, but for the most part very action packed.

What really struck me was how the director is able to show the stress that Jews at that time were under. It is amazing to see the inner struggle in the main characters. It really added to picture.

In what I thought would turn into a Jewish James Bond (Daniel Craig is the main character), the film instead offers a historically accurate (mostly) view of what happened.

I definitely recommend it. Let me know what you think!
