Election OCD?

I had a great conversation with my father last night. It mainly revolved around politics. In the midst of the conversation, my dad said he was going to be staying up late to watch all the election coverage. Thinking of the blog I just had written, I asked him what he is going to do in the following weeks after the election.

His reply surprised me… “Jacob, I’ve never been into elections as much as I have been in this one. I’ve never felt this way before. Even at work, I have CNN Electoral Map minimized and I check that every so often. I check the polls daily to see if they’re changing. I watch CNN and MSNBC when I get home until I go to bed. It’s like I’m obsessed. I can’t get enough of it.”

A lot of people are drawing parallels between 1960′s election and now. He was only 3 years old at that time, but he still remembers that time period. “Obama, like Kennedy, has motivated people in a way never before seen in America. Young people are standing up and voting. So many people want a change and the only way to get that is through Obama.”

At work we did a story about people becoming obsessed with the election. Some cases are worse than other, but worst case senario being totally consuming their lives to the point where they aren’t productive. I don’t think (and hope) that’s not the case with my father. He has always been more or less a quiet guy, but when he cares about something, he’ll speak his mind. I could feel his passion last night on the phone.

Anyone Excited?

I mailed out my absentee ballot today. I almost didn’t want to let go of it and save it for scrapbooking purposes. I’ve heard people are already starting to camp out at polling station like they are getting Hannah Montana tickets or something.

In the few elections I can remember, I truly have enjoyed the ebb and flows of this one more than others. Who knows what we are going to have to talk about come mid-December?

Tomorrow is a big day on more than one level… I’ll explain more later. For now, I’m not going to bed anytime soon and watching all the election coverage I can get. Why do we have to wait another four years for this?

Déjà Vu All Over Again

I watched all of the presidential debates this fall. After each one, I felt that McCain was on the attack and Obama was calm under pressure. Throughout the debates however, I kept feeling like I had heard everything before…

Maybe I had?

Socialism 101

The more I watch TV, the more I can feel the tension mounting in the election. Today Sarah Palin was speaking and referred to Joe the Plumber asking Obama if his economic plans were socialist.

Let me define socialism (according to dictionary.com):

1) a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole
2) (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

Obama said in 2001 that he would like to redistribute some of the tax money back to the ones that need it the most. While he didn’t implicitly say so, I think he was talking about social programs that we already have — think WELFARE. Isn’t that what welfare is though??

Anyway, everyone is sooooo stuck on that word ‘socialism’. What is ironic to me though is Bush IS practicing socialism in the way that he/the government is handling the Economic crisis on Wall Street. Please re-read definition #1 if you don’t believe me.

I don’t know if Obama wants to move from capitalism to socialism (my guess is no) but should he want that, George W. not only built the foundation, he finished the house.
